Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God;

I will be exalted among the nations.I will be exalted in the Earth.” – Psalms 46:10

Growing up I had ADD. You read that correctly had- past tense. How I got off my ADD medicine is a story in it’s self. And a whole lot of arguing and stubborn pride. It’s hard to stay silent and be still. Yet, it’s one of the most rewarding skills I have ever learned. We live in a society of the faster the better. We have fast cars, fast food, rewind buttons, email, instant messaging, and the list goes on. When did we become so in tuned to ourselves and what is best for- me, myself, and I that we lost what we stand for and the art of a community?

In my bible next to the verse I mentioned up above I wrote- “Stop!” and “Enough” Put down your phone, unplug, and enjoy the stillness. I don’t know about you but I swear my mind is always  full sprint- take no prisoner captive attitude. Yet we aren’t called that way. What I love about winter is that it’s perfect picture of this- calmness, still, and just a slower pace.

The question is- “how can I unplug and disengage?” Here are my 8 ways I shut down and be present and be still.

  1. Schedule: I know I know that almost sounds a little rehearsed. But I’m a firm believer in habits and creating a habit. If you don’t schedule time aside you will subconsciously “schedule” something into that time slot. I also find- if I write it down in my planner- be still. I will spend that time being still. If that means- going on a drive or laying in my bed.
  2. Prepare Your Heart: I know it’s hard to switch gears- going from going, going, going  to a complete stand still is hard. In this preparation time spend time in worship and journal. Journal what’s on your mind. What is your fears? What’s going through your mind?
  3. Undisturbed: If this means shutting off your phone and laptop do it! We all need that undisturbed time to sit, pray, reflect, and soak in the quietness. And refuel so that we can do what we need to do. It’s important to hit the gym or study for that big test. But it’s even more important to take care of your mental and spiritual life.
  4. Listen: In my experience God doesn’t have a huge megaphone yelling with a huge spotlight on Him with grand theatrical movements. If that was the case it would be easy to spot him and hear what he has to say. He whispers- if we aren’t in the right attitude or place to hear Him can we?
  5. Draw Closer: When your best friend is telling you a secret what do you do? You get closer to her don’t ya? You get closer to hear clearly what she has to say. I don’t know about you. But in those moments between God and myself I want to be closer than ever. I want to know more, I want to know what the bible says I want to hear all what God says. I don’t want to interrupt what God is telling me.
  6. Do Not Be Afraid: When I was a kid- I use to hate being in complete stillness or quietness. I always thought something bigger and worst is going to happen. In those minutes my overactive imagination got the worst of me. Enter into this moment with a clear mind and expect great things.
  7. Meditate: Mediating is a great way to begin closing off distractions and allowing God into the moment. There are some amazing guiding meditations that will help shut off the never ending to do lists in your mind. And help you be present.
  8. Give it to God- And Go To Sleep: When you are starting to feel anxious or panicked your palms are sweating, you are hyperventilating, and you are angry. Talk to God- give it to Him; give Him your fears, anxiety, the violent storm in your head. Talk to Him like you would talk to your best friend.

God is oh so good! To be honest God shows up to me in picture form. My favorite hobby is actually photography. God shows up to me while I have a camera in my hand. A couple days ago I had an itching to get behind the camera again. To go and explore and just get lost behind the camera for a while. While I’m out usually I have my headphones in and just shut the world out for a minute.

I’m a visual learner. I think this is how God communicates with me- And I can’t wait to share them with you!

Valentine’s Day Look

Where’s all my single ladies at?

Just because you are single this Valentine’s Day who says you can’t have fun too? So I say let’s rock those little red dresses, do your makeup, and go and have fun!

I have been loving this look lately- I think I’m obsessed! I like to call it a rose gold smokey eye look. I love makeup- I love everything about it honestly so why not rock out a complete face of makeup. Pull yourself away from the chocolate bowl, and cozy sweats. Because my friend- you are worth it!

Let’s get started on this look:

First thing I do is I prime my face. I have been using this Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer. The primer will help with any redness you naturally have in your face and will help with the foundation stay on your face all day long. Next I use this Maybelline Cover Stick Corrector Concealer. I have naturally red blotches on my face. Using this will help with my foundations on top to have a consistent look. Finally I use my ELF Eye Shadow Lock Eyelid Primer. If you have naturally oil eyelids- I would recommend looking into a eyelid primer, I have found using one helps with having your eye shadow to stay put all day and no transfer.

Next it’s time to move onto foundation or what I like to call the base- if the foundation or base of your makeup isn’t done correctly- well then the rest of the makeup look just won’t look very well- I’m afraid. First I use my Maybelline Super Stay Better Skin Camouflant Corrector. I have the color light medium. I use this on any redness I might have or any zits that are coming. Next I put on my Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles in the color light- for my under eyes. That will help brighten them up. Hint- instead of just applying this directly under my eyes I create a giant “V” shape bringing it down a little ways to create the look of a more rested Emily.

Now I move onto foundation- I have actually been using two lately. The reason being because I love both of these foundations but my skin needs a little bit of both to create a more united and pulled together look. And besides like the saying goes- two are better than one. So I have been mixing together my all time favorite foundation 24 Hour Wear Revlon Colorstay for Combination/Oily Skin in the color ivory with L’Oreal Paris True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup in the color light ivory together to create a high coverage and start building that masterpiece.

Next I powder! Does anyone else when they think of powder they think of those big beautiful pots you would find back in the Victorian age- to get that pale look that was oh so desirable? No- just me cool. But let me tell you those pots and the big applicator was pretty impressive. Okay moving on I have been loving using Cover Girl Professional loose powder I feel like it’s actually working on my face and really sealing in what I had just done beforehand. First I use my Real Technique beauty blender and tap some underneath my eyes. Following that I use my big powder brush and cover the rest of my face.

Moving onto our eyes! Yippie- to begin I like to start doing my eyebrows! I like to think that your eyebrows are the frame of your face. Have you ever seen a picture of a person who doesn’t have eyebrows? It always looks way off! And besides it is always said that your eyes are the window to your soul. And windows have boarders well I like to think that my eyebrows are that boarder. I don’t really want to spend too much time on them so I use the Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in soft brown .

Well hello eyes! Finally we are on the stage where you can start dressing up your look- your eyes! First I take ELF Molten Liquid Eye Shadow in the color Rose Gold all over the lid. I do tend to do a couple of coats to make sure that the color is how I want it to look. I do have an obsession with always going over my eye shadows multiple times. Next on top of that I take my ELF Baked Eye Shadow Trio in the color Peach Please I take a eye shadow brush and use the pink shadow in the trio and put it all over my eyelid.

Moving on I use my Revlon Colorstay Eye Shadow Palette in the color Decadent. I use number 2 in the palette which is a beautiful golden pinkish color and I put that in my crease all the way before reaching the brow bone. Then to highlight my brow bone I take the lightest shade in the palette which is like a baby pink. Finally I use the darkest shade to add dimension to my eye in the outer corner of my eye. I begin with an angled brush beginning in my crease and bringing it out- almost making a sideways “V”. Lastly I take a blending brush to blend everything together making it cohesive together.

I’m almost done with the eyes- I swear! After curling my eyelashes I take my Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum Liquid Eyeliner in Ultra Black very carefully lining my lash line. Following by with L’Oreal Paris 16 Hour Infalliable Never Fail Eyeliner in black on my tightline and my waterline or where your bottom eyelashes are.

Yay- we are FINALLY to my favorite part! Mascara- I think mascara says it all. Running behind just put on some mascara and boom you look so much more awake besides the fact you just consumed more than 3+ double shot espressos. I don’t normally wear four mascara’s but I do love to double them up! Besides- things just work together better.

First I go in with Benefits Roller Lash in black on both top and bottom lashes.Secondly I put on Benefit’s They’re Real in black on my bottom lashes (sometimes I will put it on both to add even more dimension.) Thirdly I will put on L’Oreal’s Voluminous False Fiber Lashes in black lacquer on my top lashes to add more volume. And lastly I will finish it up on both top and bottom lashes with L’Oreal’s Voluminous Butterfly Sculpt in blackest black (and I will brush off most of the excess) and apply on both top and bottom lashes.

Around this time I will take my beauty blender and start “cleaning” up or “erasing” any excess eye shadow that might have fallen off or clean up any little oopsies.

Going back to my face to bring back in some color – I start contouring my face with my ELF Contour Palette I’m using the medium shade the one that almost looks like you just got back from a beach vacation. I usually take my brush under my cheek bones like if you sucked in your cheeks like a fish, my temples where my hairline is on my forehead. And then I repeat all that with my Benefit Hoola Bronzer as well- as take that a little bit below my chin bone. Adding in some pretty pinks to my face I add in some blush. I am using my very old and trusted ELF Blush Palette in Light. I am using the two bottom blushes and mixing them a little bit together.

And lastly we are officially done with the makeup! To wrap it up I am applying a very pale almost natural color onto my lip it’s a Kate by Rimmel London lipstick in number 17 in the color ‘Rossetto’ and touching it up with Rimmel London’s 16 Hour Kiss Proof Lip Color in the shade 110 Dare to Pink.

Off to the closet we go! Time to get dressed. I say for special events it’s good to kick up your heels every now and then. Time to take out that LRD. I think every woman’s closet should have a LBD and of course a little LRD. I will show you how I like to style a little red dress for any occasion.

I would say my fashion sense is very simple. I like what I like and really that’s it. I love being modest and allowing my clothes to be the conversation piece. I love pairing something that seems simple like this very simple skater dress paired with some black leggings (I mean it IS still winter after all!) and then to pop out the red a little bit and to make the outfit a little bit more polished and interesting- I paired it with this BEAUTIFUL red blueish floral long kimono. I really love kimono’s if I’m being honest. It’s almost like a small step up from wearing a blanket! Honestly I’m not much of a heel person so I sub out a heel for a pretty black suede boot.

The second look I love rocking is actually what I like to call rocker girly. I mean we all want to channel our inner Sandy from Grease. I mean I know I do! Ha! I love mixing things together that can say two things. The lace on the dress can say- yes, I love girly things and lace. While my leather jacket can say- don’t mess with me.. 😉 Adding to the chill out vibe I rocked out my white airwalk converse.

One of my style tips- I would say you don’t have to spend a fortune to look nice. I honestly; don’t like spending too much money on clothes especially if I can get great bargains on clothes and then take them home and mix them with clothing that I have spent a little bit more on. It’s good to reward yourself but not everything in your closet has to be name brand. Now let’s talk accessories- I think they are great. But I like to be simple with it. I like to say one person (or accessory) to do the talking. Everything else should compliment that one major thing. That will really help tie in the entire outfit and make it seem effortless and timeless.

Now that you have pried yourself away from the chocolate, sweats, and leaving your own pity party that you are single. It’s time to rock! Who say’s Valentine’s Day is for only those who are in a relationship? Get together with your single girls- eat chocolate, eat food, and just cherish that season together maybe even pull out the classic board game- Dream Phone. Just have fun- laugh a little and just cherish the moment with those who you love.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Let me know- what are your plans for Valentine’s Day? And how would you style a little red dress? What is your go to makeup look right now?
